Elche

The Lady of Elche, the Iberian stone bust found in Elche in 1897

Shoes, palms, old stone and a glass of wine.

Home to a UNESCO-listed palm grove, and the place where the Lady of Elche was unearthed in 1897, Elche rewards an unhurried day. Ours mixes a little shopping, a lot of green, a stroll through the old town and a proper table at lunch.

09:15 Leave Albir

  1. Stop 01

    Salvador Artesano The shoe factory

We begin just outside Elche at the factory and its outlet, where traditional craftsmanship meets modern technology. Well-known brands at very good prices, so come with room in your bag.

  2. Stop 02

Huerto del Cura The botanical garden

Declared a National Artistic Garden in 1943, it’s a harmonious blend of Mediterranean and tropical plants, with striking collections of palms and cacti. We stop here for a refreshment in beautiful surroundings.

    The old town On foot

An easy loop through Elche’s historic centre, taking in the Town Hall, the beautiful Basilica of Santa María and the Altamira Palace.

  4. Stop 04

Lunch with local flavours In the town centre

We end the day at a traditional restaurant in the heart of town, tasting some of the region’s specialities. With a good glass of wine, of course.

Rojales

Whitewashed houses and a church tower beneath the mountains of the Costa Blanca

Shells, caves and lunch in the south.

A little-known corner of the Costa Blanca South: 18,000 people spread between the village of Rojales, Ciudad Quesada and a handful of smaller neighbourhoods, an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half from Albir.

09:30 Leave Albir

  1. Stop 01

Casa de las Conchas The Shell House

A house covered in shells from top to bottom: façade, terraces, staircases. Its owner began decorating it in the 1970s with shells gathered on the local beaches. He’s 90 now, and his children and grandchildren run the house. We stop here for a drink.

  2. Stop 02

    Cuevas del Rodeo The caves

Old cave homes carved out of the hillside, now used by artists and craftspeople, among others.
